Gannett to acquire rest of Cars.com for $1.8B

GannettIf you're reading this page, chances are you already appreciate the value of a good car website. But if you needed any further evidence, just look at how much our compatriots at Cars.com are worth: according to Bloomberg, newspaper publishing giant Gannett is paying $1.8 billion to complete its acquisition of the car shopping site.

Along with USA Today and an array of local newspapers, Gannett already owns 27 percent of Cars.com, but is buying out remaining partners McClatchy, Tribune Media, AH Belo and Graham Holdings. While we have to admit that we don't quite get the math, the transaction reportedly ends up valuing the business at $2.5 billion.

The former partners will reportedly remain affiliated with the site as part of a five-year deal that will see them selling advertising for the site in their respective regions.

Cars and people nearly swept away in US 95 flash flood near Vegas

Nevada Mudslide

Nevada may not often be thought of as a state plagued by heavy rains, but some residents who are being inundated with severe storms that are causing flash flooding and mudslides might beg to differ. One recent deluge was strong enough to overflow the US 95 highway and shut down the road. The powerful current turned the median into raging rapids capable of carrying away people and cars. Of course, with everyone carrying a camera at all times these days, the horrifying incident was captured on video.

Unfortunately, two vehicles somehow got sucked into the surging water and were pushed into the stream below. According to bystanders, the whole thing seemed to happen out of nowhere, but people put themselves in danger to try to save those stuck in the out of control cars. Thankfully, no one was injured in this terrible incident. At about 1:29 into the video, you can also catch a glimpse of the mudslide first flowing onto the road.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno - Season 20

Last week, the editors here at Autoblog sounded off with their unpopular automotive opinions, voicing the controversial sentiments for which we often catch flak from other enthusiasts upon expression. Along with our own, we invited the Autoblog faithful to share their unpopular opinions. We were thrilled to see how many of you shared your own opinions - nearly 400 of you weighed in with thoughts of your own at last count.

The comments were so good, in fact, that we have gathered a bunch of the most interesting ones and are sharing them here (occasionally corrected for grammar, style, etc.), giving their authors their just reward for taking the time and effort to write out their thoughts. Scroll below to see some more unpopular opinions as well as our reaction to your thoughts. Perhaps you'll find you aren't so alone in thinking the Chrysler PT Cruiser wasn't all bad, or that the Nissan GT-R is overrated. Perhaps.

Father gets dream '53 Hudson Hornet from family, we get something in our eye

1953 Hudson Hornet

Cars and stories go hand in hand for we enthusiasts. Most of us have that car, the one that we can trace our automotive enthusiasm back to. Moreover, for many of us, those vehicles were encountered in one impossible-to-replicate set of circumstances that made the entire experience that much more special.

For Dr. Larry Benson, his car was a 1953 Hudson Hornet. That car set off a lifelong enthusiasm for cars that inspired his son, Aaron, to scrounge through Craigslist and eBay Motors in an attempt to dig up one of the rare sedans.

Well, Aaron was successful, and setup an elaborate plan to deliver the car to his dad. Naturally, it was all caught on video. Take a look below.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to figure out why it's so damn dusty in here.

Toucan meets traffic cam in Brazil

Toucan Sam, traffic cam

A toucan followed its nose up to a traffic camera mounted high above a highway in Sao Paulo, Brazil, setting off an cute scene involving the tropical bird making an appearance on the camera's feed. Alas, it seems unlikely that he discovered any delicious breakfast cereals during his investigation.

The video, which was originally captured on Christmas Day last year and was released back in February, is just starting to make the rounds. It's not clear what prompted the bird to visit the camera, although he does appear to try and nibble on it before taking off.

Take a look if you're aching for a minute of adorable distraction.

2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year long list revealed [UPDATE]

North American Car of the Year award - closeup

This is the first time we can recall the eligible nominees in the truck/utility segment outnumbering the number of qualifying cars.

'Back to school' ads are are spooling up on TVs and in newspapers everywhere, and the auto industry's model picture is pretty clear for 2015, which means it's time for a new North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year long list.

For 2015, the jury will consider some 28 entrants in the car category, and 29 models are in contention for the truck/utility award, a category that includes crossover vehicles. This year's list is as long and varied as the industry itself, with everything from inexpensive subcompacts like the Honda Fit to exotically styled, constructed and powered dream cars like the BMW i8 up for consideration. It's also a truck/utility-heavy year, with utility players like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Colorado commingling with tiny luxury CUVs like the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. This is the first time we can recall the eligible nominees in the truck/utility segment outnumbering the number of qualifying cars. While we're not ready to call it a bellwether moment, it seems like both a reflection of industry trends and also an acknowledgment that companies like General Motors are renewing a lot of closely related product families this year (e.g. GM's full-size GMT K2UC/G SUVs).

A number of car companies have multiple nominees, including GM (one car, eight trucks/utilities), Ford (one car, seven trucks/utilities), BMW (five cars, one utility), Hyundai/Kia (three cars, two utilities) and Toyota (one car, three utilities).

Last year, the cut crystal awards went to the Chevy Corvette Stingray and Silverado in a rare brand sweep.

It's important to note that this long list is a preliminary roundup of new or substantially refreshed vehicles, and at this early stage in the process, the jurors, like the rest of the automotive media, haven't necessarily had a chance to see and drive everything on the list. As we've noted previously, the long list is designed to show which vehicles are eligible for consideration, and as such, it's a fluid one - some nominees may fall of the list if they aren't made available to the jury within the consideration period, and other vehicles not shown on this list may yet be added.

For 2015, the independent jury (NACTOY is not affiliated with any publication, show or automaker, and funding comes from dues paid by the jurors themselves) has been expanded by 10 slots to 60 jurors. The expansion comes in acknowledgement of the industry's growing number of important publications in print, online and broadcast journalism.

The jury has a lot of work ahead of it: this autumn, after jurors have driven the nominees, an initial round of voting will be held, and the resulting "short list" of a dozen or so vehicles will trigger a further period of assessment followed by another vote that will result in three finalists for each category. A final round of voting will commence, and the winners will be announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Check out both lists of nominees by scrolling below, then have your say on who you think should win in Comments.

UPDATE: In the text above, we commented on the fluidity of the NACTOY long list, and indeed, that's proving to be the case already - the Mini Hardtop has been added (although it initially carried a 2014 MY designation, it arrived too late for consideration in last year's voting) and the Honda HR-V has been removed, as it won't be available in time for judging. The text of the story and the nominee list has been updated accordingly.

Dashcam video of Taiwan's gas-triggered street explosions hits the web

Taiwan Gas Main Explosion

Dashcam video has brought us some fantastic images over the years, but it recorded true tragedy overnight on July 31 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A gas main explosion in the city was responsible for at least 25 deaths and over 250 injuries, according to The Wall Street Journal. The cause of the horrific event is still under investigation. However, people in the area reported smelling gas beforehand.

The mix of dashcam, surveillance, cell phone and drone video shows several portions of this tragedy and its aftermath. Flames shot up several feet into the sky and explosions rocked the area. Now, as far as you can see, the road has been blown apart with huge chunks of asphalt and overturned cars littering the area. We extend our condolences to anyone affected by this disaster.
