Toucan meets traffic cam in Brazil

Toucan Sam, traffic cam

A toucan followed its nose up to a traffic camera mounted high above a highway in Sao Paulo, Brazil, setting off an cute scene involving the tropical bird making an appearance on the camera's feed. Alas, it seems unlikely that he discovered any delicious breakfast cereals during his investigation.

The video, which was originally captured on Christmas Day last year and was released back in February, is just starting to make the rounds. It's not clear what prompted the bird to visit the camera, although he does appear to try and nibble on it before taking off.

Take a look if you're aching for a minute of adorable distraction.

Elon Musk to get spot on The Simpsons

Tesla Motors IPO

It's hard to believe that The Simpsons is moving into its 26th season, but there's good news for auto enthusiasts, especially of the EV variety. The show's executive producer, Al Jean, confirmed on Twitter that Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk would have a guest spot on the show in the upcoming season. Even better, it sounds like a pretty significant role.

Elon Musk in ep 1/11 and not a "kiss ass" celebrity guest star turn: Burns tries to kill him, and we reveal Musk's master password.

- Al Jean (@AlJean) July 29, 2014

According to Automotive News, Jean first announced the episode during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. It's titled "The Musk Who Fell to Earth" and has Mr. Burns somehow losing all of his money to the Tesla boss. With his name prominently in the title, it gives the indication that Elon's role is going to be a lot bigger than just muttering a few lines in one scene and then walking away.

This is technically Musk's second appearance on The Simpsons. An earlier episode featured Elon Musk as a fragrance of the fictional ASK Body Spray. Tesla put up a screenshot of it on their blog and said, "You know you're famous when you get featured on the Simpsons." Apparently, the CEO is an even bigger deal now with this guest-starring gig.

Of course, The Simpsons has made at least two, great contributions to the automotive world - the Homer and the Canyonero. Our only hope is that Musk can somehow feature EV versions of them both in his episode.

Seinfeld laments AMC Gremlin with hilarious Jon Stewart

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Jon Stewart

A good comedian can rifle off a one-liner when put in the right situation. A great comedian, though, can fire off zingers in any situation. That much is obvious from the start of the latest episode of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

The quips begin essentially from the start, with Seinfeld introducing today's featured car as a competitor to the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega, a pair of cars he calls "horrible." The competitor, though, "was even more horrible." Yes, we're talking about the AMC Gremlin.

Why the Gremlin, though? A car that is accepted as one of the single biggest four-wheeled abominations in the long, sad history of four-wheeled abominations? Well, it just happened to be the first car of guest Jon Stewart, of The Daily Show fame. With Stewart in tow, the one-liners really get going. Calling the Gremlin "contraception" for New Jersey's young men in the 1970s and a car for the "broke ignorant", the pair's tour around Manhattan in the dreadful hatchback is cut short by something a bit more suited to the tastes of CICGC fans.

Smart previews the biggest little city car you'll never drive

Big Smart Video

We are right on the precipice of the launch on an all-new generation of the Smart Fortwo in July. While the current one isn't exactly loved by US reviewers, the latest model rides on a fresh platform shared with the Renault Twingo in Europe. The company seems to be aiming for wider success this time with both two- and four-door versions on the way. In two new videos, the automaker cheekily shows us exactly what not to expect from its upcoming vehicle with a promo for its biggest city car ever.

The videos are actually kind of funny, and they slyly mock the concept of larger vehicles being better, especially in urban areas. Whatever Smart has up its sleeve for the next Fortwo, it's a very safe to bet that this is exactly the opposite, but these videos are certainly a clever marketing ploy.

Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Two of our favorite web series have been nominated for Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Short-Format Nonfiction category. Jay Leno's Garage and Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee are up for the prestigious awards, which will be handed out on August 25.

There are four other challengers in the category, including Park Bench with Steve Buscemi, ESPN's 30 For 30 Shorts, National Geographic's Cosmos: A Deeper Dive, and I Was There: Boston Marathon Bombings.

This is the second nomination for Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which is in the midst of its fourth season. Leno, meanwhile, is no stranger to short-format Emmy recognition. This will mark JGL's sixth nomination, and it won the Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Nonfiction Programs (the predecessor to today's category) in 2011.

Fiat turns to Funny or Die with new Italian-centric video spots

Fiat Neighbors Videos

The web video might be the sitcom of the modern age as the main way people consume comedy. Even if you don't want to sit down and watch a TV show, you can dedicate just a few minutes for a laugh from a brief film. Fiat found huge success last year with its Backseat Italians ad for the 500L on Funny or Die, with over 1.6 million views as of this writing. So the Italian automaker is playing on its country's stereotypes again in a new online series called Neighbors.

The concept behind the videos is super-simple. An attractive Italian couple with their Fiat 500L moves in next door to a stereotypical suburban family and hilarity ensues. Most of the shorts play up humorous misunderstandings in translation like with the phrase "When in Rome..." So far, the best of the bunch is probably Express Lane to Trouble about what happens when you drink too much espresso. If you like what you see, there are still two more episodes on the way soon.

Scroll down to watch all five current videos. They're only a few minutes long and should at least provide a good chuckle. You can also read Fiat's press release about the stunt, below.

Comedians in Cars Getting Cocaine with Joel McHale and Tony Hale

Comedians in Cars Getting Cocaine

We have to hand it to Jerry Seinfeld for making a go of his web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The king of observational humor manages to get some of the biggest names in comedy into some seriously cool cars (and some rather curious ones). But what if they weren't getting coffee? What if they were getting an even more potent pick-me-up?

While we wouldn't condone drug abuse - certainly not while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle - that's the basis behind this comedic spoof. Starring Talk Soup's Joel McHale (who you might also recognize from NBC's Community) and Tony Hale (of Arrested Development and Veep fame), the three-and-a-half-minute clip takes place behind the wheel of a 1959 Ford Skyliner - easily as cool as anything Seinfeld has driven, but hardly the kind of low-key getaway car you'd want to take on a drug run. Watch them get the blow in the video below.

LOLVO Volvo V60 video leverages the power of cats on cars

Volvo V60 R-Design

You know what we haven't posted in a long time? A very weird, car-related video. It's high time we address this failing.

As strange videos go, this one is truly bizarre. The two-minute clip focuses on the Volvo V60 R-Design, although you're not going to be learning anything about the car. Instead, you're going to be focused on the weird narrator (and the cat decals on the windows).

It's like someone taught the Swedish Chef to speak English, but with a ridiculous accent and a script that's been fed through Google Translate. The result is a weirdly cerebral voice speaking in a manner that borders on gibberish mixed with information about the car. We're particularly fond of, "In accordance with Volvo tradition... the car... is... of course... furnished, with an inside." "Floor bibs," in reference to the floor mats, was an office favorite, as well.

Scroll down for the video, and then head into Comments and let us know what you think.

Motor Authority implores us to Give A Shift about manual transmissions

Give a Shift

As auto enthusiasts, we have to accept that the general public is never going to embrace the manual transmission in a big way ever again. Automatics, CVTs and dual clutches are winning the war, in part because many people think of their car as an appliance. It transports them to and from work, and any way to make the drudgery involve less conscious thought is a welcome relief. The fact that modern automatics are often more fuel efficient than three-pedal setups isn't helping either. However, the stick shift isn't dead yet, especially if we take Motor Authority's advice and Give a Shift about them.

The video, which is a dead-on parody of Sarah McLachlan's ASPCA commercials, implores enthusiasts to keep the manual alive by owning one. Not only are they probably safer, but the tactile control creates a bond between man and machine that's absent with an automatic. It's certainly a welcome message to our ears and very similar to the Save the Manuals campaign from Car and Driver from 2010.

The manual transmission battleground is now in the world of performance cars, and enthusiasts at least have a beachhead there. The latest Corvette and Camaro both reportedly have a stick shift take rate of around 30 percent. However, every Porsche with PDK or similar choice might be one more nail in the coffin for the clutch pedal. Let's keep that from happening. Scroll down to watch Motor Authority's PSA and do what you can to keep the H-pattern gearbox on the road.

The British require more of their delivery vans

Vauxhall Vivaro van

In the United Kingdom, work vans are big business. They're such a big deal that an entire sub-culture surrounds their drivers, known as white van men. White van men tend to look at their vans the same way that die-hard American pickup owners look at their trucks - as tough, do-everything workhorses. So Vauxhall's cheek with this ad will certainly be appreciated.

It focuses on the General Motors subsidiary's cargo van, the new Vivaro, and how it can handle just about anything that's thrown at it. Rather than demonstrate this by showing off its hauling prowess, though, Vauxhall instead handed the keys over to precision driver Paul Swift, who it has dubbed "Stig-aro" as an ode to his work with Top Gear Live. Swift puts the Vivaro through its paces at the van's Luton factory. According to Vauxhall, Swift's work is now "seen as commonplace among the 1200-strong workforce at the historic Luton factory."

"As Britain's largest LCV manufacturer, we want to ensure that every customer receives the very best van that we can produce, and that means putting it through the most demanding maneuvers we can think of," said Plant Director Mike Wright.

Take a look below to see Stig-aro and the new Vivaro in action, and then scroll down for the official press release from Vauxhall.
